comScore has released the data for the most popular smartphone and mobile apps. According to the report, the iPhone is still the most sought-after device in the United States.

comScore is an American Internet analytics company that provides data to some of the world's largest companies and agencies. They have a group of users who have monitoring software installed on their computers or mobile devices.

The results presented by comScore reflect the numbers for May 2014 and they are compared with the Market Share for February 2014. The chart shows Apple as the clear winner in the smartphone battle, in the United States alone. comScore says there are currently 169 million people in the US that own a smartphone and that represents 70% of the market penetration.

Apple ranks #1 with 41.9 percent of the US smartphone subscribers. The iPhone is actually up 0.6 percent since February of this year. Same chart shows that Samsung takes a distant second place in the US Market Share with 27.8 percent. The rival company has a bigger increase since February: 0.8%.

The other companies mentioned in the chart are LG with 6.5 percent, Motorola with 6.3% and HTC with 5.1 percent of the US Market Share. The numbers of Apple's competitors are so low, that it takes three of them to match the performance of the winner.

comScore says they have used two different techniques to measure the scores. MobiLens and Mobile Metrix. MobiLens is using web browsing, app usage, social networking and messaging to calculate the number of smartphone users.

When it comes to the Top Smartphone Platforms, Apple stays on the second place, just like it did back in February 2014. According to comScore, Android ranks number one as a platform with 52.1 percent, followed by Apple with just 41.9%.

Microsoft, BlackBerry and Symbian go at the bottom of the chart with numbers below 4 percent each.

comScore also takes on the most used Smartphone Apps, but this time it only counts the US smartphone users that are 18 and up and own an iOS or Android phone.

Number one in the top Smartphone App Audience is Facebook with a whopping 76.4%. The second most used mobile app is Google Play (51.8%), followed by YouTube with a close 51.7 percent.

Facebook and Google have numerous apps in this chart. Mobile users tend to tap more on Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, Instagram or Facebook Messenger than on other icons.

Apple is showing up in this chart with of its apps: Apple Maps with 25.3% of the audience and iTunes Radio / iCloud with just 21.6 percent.
