Many speculated in the past that an advanced iPhone OS would be suitable for a tablet

The Apple tablet is on everyone’s lips, but little talk is there about an iPhone OS 4.0, let alone SDK 4.0. That’s right, it appears that accompanying the rumored tablet is an enhanced iPhone OS to which a new SDK is attributed. Apple seemingly wants to get developers coding for the platform from day one.

Recent speculation has centered around the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, which, apparently, has been confirmed as the venue for Apple’s big, new announcement this month. “Sources in a position to know” are telling the people at All Things D that, “Apple is indeed planning a media event later this month at which the company will announce a major new product.” And while some see the tablet running “Mac OS X 10.7 Clouded Leopard,” other people in touch with Apple claim they’ve heard something of an iPhone OS 4.0.

CultOfMac reports that Apple’s January 27 product announcement will not only see the introduction of the tablet, but also the iPhone OS 4.0 and an associated Software Development Kit (SDK) for programmers, citing French site Mac4Ever. A relevant (translated) excerpt is provided from the report in question. It is reproduced below, in its entirety.

“Several of our sources give us two pieces of information concerning the famous Apple tablet: In late January, in addition to its tablet, Cupertino should have a beta of iPhone OS 4, accompanied by an SDK. Our informants also tell us of a ‘simulator’ specifically adapted for the tablet. Evidently, the major novelty of the SDK therefore concerns the interface, making it easier for developers to adapt to different screen resolutions. The new iPhone could also benefit from a higher pixel density.”

Speculation aside, Apple may surprise the tech world (again) by introducing something that doesn’t fall in line with any of these forecasts.
