Cupertino, California-based Apple released the beta 3 version of its upcoming iPhone 3.1 operating system on Monday. Developers now have access both to the new flavor of the OS as well as to iPhone OS 3.1 SDK, and it seems that the company is getting closer and closer to the final release of the platform, which has been set for September.

According to the news the new iPhone OS 3.1 Beta 3 has been listed as build 7C116a, while the related SDK is listed as build 9M2808. Both the new version of the operating system and the updated SDK have been made available for download for the registered iPhone developers via the iPhone Dev Center.

According to some voices over the Internet, the new iPhone 3.1 beta 3 should offer iPhone 3GS users the possibility to copy and paste videos, and the short clip available below shows you a bit of how this functionality supposedly works. A Data Tethering Counter might have also been included, and it seems that the vibrate warning when icons are moved has disappeared.

However, there are no exact details on what novelties have been included in the new version of the operating system. According to some of the latest rumors on the Web, one thing that the iPhone OS 3.1 is expected to deliver to devs is support for augmented reality applications on the recently launched iPhone 3GS.

In case this proves true, along with the new beta flavor of the iPhone / iPod touch platform, Apple might also deliver to third-party developers a series of video APIs that would offer them the possibility to start work on augmented reality apps. For what it's worth, this is only in the rumor side for the time being, but we could soon see a wide range of such applications coming to the App Store, which would certainly make a lot of users out there rejoice.
