MuscleNerd, a member of the iPhone Dev Team, has posted a demonstration video of ultrasn0w, the new unlock tool for iPhone software 3.0. Set to be released on Friday, ultrasn0w works in the favor of those looking to unlock 3.0-updated phones, thanks to a hole found in the new baseband firmware, so the old yellowsn0w payload could again be injected.

“On Tuesday evening (just before the big Apple release) we’ll do a live demo of the yellowsn0w carrier unlock working on official 3.0 firmware [...] The demo should answer everything you need to know about the new yellowsn0w. But it’s good news for iPhone 3G unlockers everywhere,” the iPhone Dev Team says on the Dev Team blog.

“Meanwhile, we’re in the middle of testing our PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools, which will work with iTunes 8.2. The jailbreak of course continues to work on 3.0 for all devices it ever worked on, thanks due [sic.] the Pwnage 2.0 technique released last summer. Our tools will be released no sooner than the Apple release (just in case!),” the team adds.

According to a Modmyi forum post, a few noteworthy aspects surrounding ultrasn0w include:

– Apple closed the injection vector that YellowSn0w used. – new version available under the name of UltraSn0w. – ultrasn0w unlocks any current iPhone model running the 3.0 firmware regardless of baseband, bootloader, etc. – the tool uses the same payload as YellowSn0w, injected into new hole in the baseband. – the new hole was found by accident by a regular iPhone user outside of the dev team (more details, including the user’s name, are available in the demo video). – the ultrasn0w release date is Friday, June 19 (coincides with iPhone 3G S launch).
