Apple is known to prepare the unveiling of a new OS version for the iPhone today. Rumored additions include MMS and tethering via Bluetooth and USB, as well as the long missed copy-paste functionality.

Last week, Engadget reported that Apple would display an "advance preview of what they're building" on March 17. Reportedly, Apple will be offering members of the press a sneak peek at the fresh iPhone OS 3.0, as well as a look at a new version of the Software Development Kit (SDK). The Boy Genius Report picked up on the news, adding a few tidbits on its own, such as MMS and tethering via Bluetooth and USB (allegedly) being included with the fresh software version.

Days later, Digg founder Kevin Rose dropped a bombshell citing reliable sources as saying that iPhone OS 3.0 is also delivering the much anticipated copy-paste functionality. According to Rose, citing a "friend" who has previously been a reliable source, to select text, users would double-tap on a word to bring up the iPhone's magnifying glass and then extend quotes (“...”) to select the text they wish to copy. Rose makes no mentioning of the “cut” functionality.

The Digg founder also mentioned "multitasking" being added with the fresh OS. The feature would let users launch new apps without quitting an active program. Lastly, a Gizmodo report also claims to have similar tips relating to copy-and-paste - independent of Rose's comments.

While Rose has a mixed track record for Apple-related rumors, there is reason to believe copy-paste will materialize in iPhone 3.0, with Apple itself suggesting that text manipulation on the iPhone would include this feature, eventually.

As usual, Apple is expected to throw in a surprise or two, besides confirming these additions. Developers should note that Apple is also prepping a fresh version of the Software Development Kit (SDK) to accompany OS 3.0.
