14 DAY TRIAL // Apple is set to unlock video MMS capabilities with the release of iPhone OS 3.0 this summer, according to the findings of a few tech-savvy folks over at The Boy Genius Report. Tests run on iPhone OS 3.0 beta and a 3G handset have shown that “you can receive and play videos over MMS just fine.”
Upon launching the new iPhone OS 3.0 beta and iPhone SDK 3.0, Apple told those enrolled in its Developer Program that they could use features that are still locked for users of iPhone 2.2.1, in order to test the limits of the software and come up with cool new apps to boot when the fresh OS makes its debut this summer. One of those features announced at Apple's latest keynote event was MMS. However, Apple's SVP of iPhone Software, Scott Forstall, didn't mention anything about video support on stage.
Now, courtesy of the aforementioned source, the iPhone community should be glad to learn that summer 2009 is bringing MMS supporting video as well, while a fresh iPhone model with recording capabilities seems more than likely to launch along the new software. Ever since the iPhone 3.0 beta was released, only the lucky and skilled have managed to enable MMS on their iPhones. It’s not that it’s impossible to do, you just have to know your way around the OS and do some modifications, enter settings, and that sort of stuff. What everyone has been wondering, however, was how the iPhone would handle videos sent over MMS. We’re happy to report that you can receive and play videos over MMS just fine. MMS is just one of dozens of features new to the iPhone OS. Less sophisticated, but just as important features like copy/paste have also been confirmed for the summer release. The fresh features look and sound like real treats for members of the iPhone community, although most smartphones had been offering such capabilities even before the first iPhone was released.
