iPhone OK With Gmail, Windows Mobile Blanked and Users Can't Take It Any More

The problem wasn't addressed by Google in over a month

"Greetings from Planet Earth! We come in peace, we are friends!" is what the people complaining about the infamous issue of GMail not showing anything except a blank page instead of the regular messages on Windows Mobile could have said to Google and they would have probably been granted more attention. It looks like the customer support service is slacking but that's not new.

After rolling out the GMail IMAP support
in October with a lot of media hype around it, Google must have kicked back and started enjoying a couple of beers while turning a deaf ear to complaints pouring in. Shortly after the IMAP capability was activated users began voicing their grievances concerning the HTML e-mails showing blank on their phones or that the headers appeared but not the messages themselves.

After officially filing a complaint, a response was indeed given, that "Google hasn't had a chance to test the WM mail client," and the problem was immediately added to the GMail known issues page. This happened on November the 16th and this far (by the 28th) nothing has been changed. That's almost two weeks of no news that the unfortunate Windows Mobile users have had to endure and hope through that the next day might be the one.

Another problem that Google will most likely have to address is the exaggerated battery consumption that WM devices have to endure every time they try to connect to GMail. Just a simple syncing with the server drops the energy level in the battery by about 4%. If you check your mail three times a day and you still get to do the talking part as per usual, charging your phone once a day seems to be the only viable option.

Nancy Gohring of the IDG News Service concludes that "The issues highlight the challenges that Google has complained about in working with the mobile industry. Application developers must tweak or write new applications for each handset operating system and often even for different handsets running the same software. Google hopes to solve the problem with its Android mobile platform, which it plans to make available for free and open source. Some mobile experts, however, have suggested that Android may only exacerbate the problem by adding one more platform that developers will have to address."
