MobiHealthNews, a daily, online trade journal for the mobile health industry, has confirmed the availability of its first paid research report: The World of Health and Medical Apps, while Logical Images, Inc., a company providing professional visual diagnostic decision support, has released its first medical app for the iPhone and iPod touch - VisualDx Mobile.

Written by Brian Dolan, MobiHealthNews’ report acts as a quantitative analysis of health-related applications for smartphones, whose abundance has skyrocketed during the past six months, according to a MobiHealthNews press release. There are currently almost 6,000 such applications, 30 percent of which are being used by actual physicians, nurses and medical students around the world. The report, titled “MobiHealthNews Presents: The World of Health and Medical Apps,” contains 70 charts and graphs, and more than 50 pages of quantitative analyses. It is a downloadable asset and costs $99.

“The more than 1,700 smartphone applications specifically designed for use by healthcare professionals include a wide variety of apps: Medical reference applications, medical calculators, electronic medical records (EMR) apps, charge capture apps, patient scheduler applications and more,” Brian Dolan, editor of MobiHealthNews and author of the report, explained. “Not surprisingly, the largest grouping of apps for healthcare professionals is medical reference applications.”

For the second part of our story, Logical Images, Inc., the self-touted expert source for professional visual diagnostic decision support, has released VisualDx Mobile. However, the release of its first medical app for the iPhone and iPod touch will be formally announced at HIMSS 2010 in Atlanta at the show’s Innovative Technology Pavilion, according to the company’s own press release. As a VisualDx subscriber and owner of an Apple handset, you can download VisualDx Mobile for free from Apple’s App Store.

“I am very impressed that VisualDx Mobile has the same superior image quality that I have now come to expect with the desktop version,” Dr. Steven Howard of Cross Keys Internal Medicine, LLP and VisualDx Mobile user, said. “VisualDx Mobile is a reliable resource to quickly access disease information that I can share with my patients to educate them on their condition. When I have a patient with a visual presentation I’m uncertain of, I enter relevant findings to see a list of the best possible diagnoses, including a nice corresponding array of images, all in just a matter of seconds.”
