New reports singing the same MMS tune

Apple (along with US carrier AT&T) is widely believed to finally enable MMS, and other iPhone-related functions, sometime during September. New reports say the announcement will occur at a yet-unconfirmed September 7-9 event said to be focused on iPods and iTunes.

AppModo reports that “the news leak of Apple holding an event the week of September 7th, with September 9th being rumored as the exact date” has renewed speculation on announcements to come. According to the report, those include “a refresh to their iPod line, iTunes Version 9.0 information with social networking, initial OS X Snow Leopard sales figures [...], Cocktail – a multimedia application, as well as an availability announcement of MMS for the iPhone...”

Softpedia reported last week that an AT&T insider had confirmed to an iPhone-focused website that Apple was planning to release OS 3.1 software update for iPhone and iPod touch in September. The launch would also be marked by the enabling of MMS support from the American carrier, the report said. Reportedly, an insider emailed the website with the respective tip around two weeks before the news was made public.

Other reports suggest that an iTunes 9 with Last.fm, Facebook and Twitter integration may also play a key role in the unconfirmed September event. Citing a reliable source, The Boy Genius Report revealed that iTunes 9 would be packing support for Blu-ray playback. Lastly, some also believe Apple is ready to announce plans for releasing a tablet device. However, iPhone-MMS remains the one thing almost certain to see the light of day in September.

Apple is known to use its website to publicly announce events where company execs take the stage and deliver keynote addresses. Steve Jobs, the company’s CEO, who has recently returned from a six-month-long medical leave, is expected to host the entire event, if rumors are to materialize.
