Blogger claims MMS has kicked in on his iPhone weeks ahead of the official launch date

PCWorld is informing that reports about MMS activation on the iPhone are beginning to surface, the earliest of which comes from Mediaite blogger Ash Kalb, who reported on Saturday that select U.S. iPhone customers now had MMS support.

The blogger reported that MMS suddenly appeared on his phone soon after he had performed the iPhone OS 3.1 software update, released on Wednesday. Not long after Kalb's blog entry was posted, other US customers claimed MMS had arrived for them as well.

The great majority were running the newly released iPhone software and a carrier file 5.0. Even jailbreak users claim to benefit from the new functionality ahead of time. However, as PCWorld points out, for almost every user who says they have MMS, there are two others, in the same area, that contradict such claims.

Avid Softpedia readers may remember that AT&T announced the launch date for MMS on the iPhone around two weeks ago, issuing a written report that confirmed that September 25 was the launch date for the much-awaited service. Soon after, the US carrier also posted a YouTube video featuring “Seth the Blogger Guy.”

In the clip, AT&T’s staffer explains that the explosion in data growth over the past several years has been the major factor in the delay. Seth asserts that AT&T has been working around the clock to expand its infrastructure and start handling data demands on its network. Just like with AT&T’s written announcement, Seth reveals that the carrier has been eager to not only offer MMS to iPhone users, but also to get it right from the start. Still, Seth says nothing about MMS arriving early in some areas, or for some users.

Since it all comes down to customer reports for the time being, we ask our readers: who of you has been able to use MMS on your iPhone and, if so, under what circumstances?
