iPhoneMMS, a web app for iPhone users on O2 in the UK, makes viewing MMS messages easier. It requires an Internet connection, and retrieves your messages from O2 much like o2.co.uk/m, but in a far more user-friendly way, optimized for the iPhone's screen and bandwidth.

Basically, iPhone MMS offers users what Apple, O2 and AT&T wouldn't, that is, the viewing of the MMS messages in a user-friendly way. Frustrated O2 users in the UK will agree that they're better off drawing the picture message and using the post office to have it delivered to someone, rather than using an MMS. iPhone owners who receive an MMS are given a link to a web app that allows them to view their picture, which somewhat messes up the whole experience. Some actually want to use MMS to ask their girlfriend to marry them. Can they do that with iPhone? With iPhoneMMS, they just might.

“The iPhone is a revolutionary device,” says developer Ross McKillop, “but it is lacking a major feature found on most phones in the UK and Europe - MMS, also known as Picture Messaging.”

McKillop hopes to “bridge the gap” with iPhoneMMS, a web app that makes viewing MMS messages on the iPhone simpler and more enjoyable than viewing them on the O2 website, “which is designed for desktop computers, and works very poorly on the iPhone,” the developer says.

McKillop reveals that iPhoneMMS acts as a proxy to the official iPhone MMS service, retrieving information and optimizing it for display on the iPhone. Users can also eMail any received message directly to the iPhone, so the message can still be viewed when it expires from the O2 servers. Additionally, this ability allows customers to view an MMS even when they do not have access to an Internet connection. Furthermore, “the MMS application follows the Apple iPhone UI Guidelines, ensuring it fits in with the iPhone's native applications,” McKillop says.

Currently, iPhoneMMS is not available at the App Store. “...Work is underway on a native application, which will offer tighter integration with the iPhone and an easier way to send MMS messages (without using eMail!)", says the developer.
