Skip, play, pause songs in iTunes on your new MacBook using the iPhone's headset

Folks over at iPhoneFootprint have this interesting theory of how Apple's products will eventually hold hands, talk the same language... eh, enough metaphors – use matching accessories.

The perfect example is the iPhone, which works as a remote for the Apple TV. The Apple Remote itself works with several Apple devices. But what about the iPhone's headset? Apple's smartphone ships with a stereo headset with mic. The headset also sports controls for music playback on your iPhone, controls that reportedly work with Apple's “unibody” aluminum MacBooks.

According to those who discovered this, the iPhone headset can be used to pause/restart iTunes music by clicking the controls once, while double clicking jumps one track ahead and triple clicking skips one track backward, just like with the iPhone. Not only does this work perfectly, the source reveals, but the headset's built-in microphone is also perfect for voice chatting.

On the Configurations list from the Technical Specifications page for the newly-released 13'' aluminum MacBook, Apple notes that its device boasts two built-in stereo speakers, a built-in omnidirectional microphone, combined optical digital input/analog line in, and a combined optical digital output/analog line out.

However, when speaking of the new MacBook's Audio capabilities more thoroughly, Apple reveals the following:

Audio

- Built-in stereo speakers - Built-in omnidirectional microphone - Combined optical digital input/analog line in (minijack) - Combined optical digital output/analog line out (minijack) - Supports Apple Stereo Headset with microphone

So there you have it. We checked out the audio capabilities listed by Apple for the 15-inch MacBook Pro and it too supports Apple Stereo Headset with microphone. The 17-inch model, however, doesn't. Nor does the MacBook Air, or the old White MacBook, now selling for US$999.

Apparently, Apple didn't find it necessary to mention that its new notebooks now support Apple Stereo Headset with Microphone while describing the new devices. And why would it? Carving aluminum bricks is in now. Small details like these can wait to be discovered. Plus, it's fun!
