If there was ever any doubt that Windows runs the world, than it should fade away when you will see the adjacent image. How can it be otherwise when even the iPhone displays are running Windows XP? At the Financial Analyst Meeting 2007 on July 26, Steve Ballmer, Microsoft Chief Executive Officer revealed that the company estimates a 1 billion
install base for Windows by the summer of 2008. With the direct retail and OEM license availability of Windows XP ending come February 2008, Vista will be Microsoft's vessel to 1 billion Windows based machines. But for the time being, Microsoft's latest operating system, accounts for just 5.41% of the operating system's market.

Windows XP's share has been eroding following the availability of Windows Vista, but the operating system Microsoft launched back in 2001 is still the dominant presence on the market with a share of 81.40%. In this context, the image on the top left should generate no surprise. It's just an iPhone display powered by Windows XP. And a rebooting Windows XP, for that matter. I am sure that Apple fans will automatically presume that there was a blue screen of death error involved, but this will contribute little to diminishing the experience of seeing what really lies behind the iPhone.

The iPhone was premiered on June 29 and is currently available exclusively in the United States. Because Apple decided to close down the phone to developers, the Cupertino-based company instead transitioned the Mac OS X Safari 3 browser to 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Vista and Windows XP. Safari is designed to provide developers with an alternative to accessing the phone directly. Still, the iPhone is not impenetrable as Independent Security Evaluators proved by hacking the device. Apple recently released the first security patch for the iPhone, just ahead of the Back Hat 2007 conference in Las Vegas.
