Brits increasingly grab smartphones thanks to great selection of apps

Powwownow, the makers of a free iOS conference calling application, are highlighting a study about British people increasingly using smartphones. The primary reason, according to the Ofcom study, is the wide range of applications available to them.

“A recent study has shown that Brits are increasingly using smartphones,” says  Powwownow, who believes “this owes to great features like their conference calling iPhone app.”

Named just like the company, the software brings free mobile conference calling at the touch of a button.

Users of the Powwownow iPhone app can schedule conferences, set automatic call alerts, and even store and manage their personal details.

The results of this new research by Ofcom revealed that over a quarter of adults and nearly half of teenagers now own a smartphone.

Powwownow says the figures are a direct result of “the fantastic range of apps available on these devices.”

According to Powwownow CEO, Andrew Pearce, "Smartphones are an entirely different breed of mobile phone - not only can people make calls and send texts on the move, they can now check their email, network with their friends, read the news, take part in conference calls and even look up a recipe for what they're going to make for dinner using smartphone apps.”

Pearce believes the content found on venues like Apple’s App Store has caused “a fundamental shift in the way people go about their daily lives and this can be easily put down to the quality and diversity of the smartphone applications available on the market today."

Around 47 percent of adult smartphone owners have downloaded an app on their smartphone, the study showed. Naturally, the most popular ones are free apps.

The study also identifies some key types of behavior among smartphone owners, such as who uses their device for work during their free time (on holiday), or who makes personal phone calls during office hours.
