The infamous team of hackers that prides itself on jailbreaking the iPhone and iPad have posted a tasteful goodbye message dedicated to Steve Jobs on their blog, referencing the Tom & Jerry cartoons that symbolize the cat-and-mouse game between their crew and the company headquartered at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California.

As Apple fans worldwide should well know by now, Steve Jobs has resigned as Apple CEO, taking up the position of Chairman of the Board.

Tim Cook, Apple’s former Chief Operating Officer, is taking up the role of CEO.

In response to the sad news, the iPhone Dev Team posted the picture displayed to the left, accompanied by the following message:

“We loved the chase!

Good luck, Steve.

Signed, Jailbreakers and tinkerers everywhere.”

The blog entry is titled "The coolest cat".

For those who aren’t very familiar with the iPhone Dev Team, they’re the infamous group of hackers that enjoy tinkering with Apple’s devices using something called PwnageTool.

They have been playing the cat-and-mouse game with Apple since 2007, when Steve first introduced the world to the iPhone.

It’s not a long time, but sometimes good things are short-lived.

To see that even the people whom some consider Apple’s enemies love Steve Jobs, mourning his departure as CEO, brings a sense of reassurance that the Cupertino gem will remain a favorite in the hearts of technology fans out there for years to come, even with Jobs gone.

In the same respect, it also shows how much people identify the company and its products - in this case, the iPhone - with Mr. Jobs.

John Gruber, Apple pundit and author of the Daring Fireball blog, said: “This is not out of nowhere, it’s not even unexpected. We could all see this was coming — but it is a shock.”

And while it’s also surprising to the iPhone Dev-Team, rest assured that Apple will continue to innovate and the hackers will continue to jailbreak.

With Steve Jobs resigned, some may believe the obsessive controlling Apple we all know will dissipate. That’s likely not going to happen any time soon. And we’re sure the iPhone Dev Team won’t have it any other way.

Just look at the Tom & Jerry picture again. Where would the fun be if they got along well?
