The infamous iPhone Dev Team has acknowledged Apple’s move to patch a hole allowing the hackers to put JailbreakMe 2.0 into the hands of iOS customers, but trashed the company for failing to release a similar patch for first-gen iPhone and iPod touch customers worldwide.

In a post on the Dev-Team Blog, the hackers note that, “On Wednesday, Apple (finally) released firmware 4.0.2, which patches the very large security holes exploited by @comex in the 2nd incarnation of jailbreakme.com.”

“The only problem is they outright abandoned iPhone2G and iPod Touch 1G users!”, the Team boasts.

According to the hackers, first-generation device owners are “completely vulnerable to truly malicious variants of jailbreakme.”

While these variants aren not out yet, “they’re sure to come,” the Dev Team assures its fans.

So one member of the team decided to do the work for Apple and coded a Cydia package that will reportedly patch the hole for all devices and all firmware versions starting with 2.0.

That member has been identified as Saurik, the so-called gatekeeper of Cydia, an online repository for the jailbroken community, which replicates Apple’s iTunes App Store, in terms of purpose.

“Since the only reason for 4.0.2 was to fix the security holes, and since the upcoming Cydia package will fix them too (and then some!), everybody should sit tight on 4.0.1 (or lower) and install the Cydia package as soon as it’s out,” the Team’s advice goes.

Softpedia doesn't encourage jailbreaking / unlocking the iPhone / iPod touch / iPad, or any other device.

This article has a purely informational purpose and doesn't, in any way, suggest that you should hack your Apple device.

Using hacks may render your device unusable, or may reduce the quality of your experience employing the respective device.

If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch / iPad may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular-service provider.
