Renowned group of hackers issues fake, April 1st announcement

The notorious iPhone Dev Team has posted an evidently fake announcement on its blog, suggesting it has obtained vital information about Apple’s upcoming tablet plans. These allegedly include a smaller version of the iPad, complete with a 13 kbits/s speech codec. It’s a nice April Fools touch on behalf of the infamous team of hackers, although we expected a tad more from its code-savvy bunch.

The Team rarely updates its blog and, when it does, a frenzy generally kicks off. Whether it’s new jailbreak tools, or updates to previous achievements, the blog is flooded with feedback each time the Dev Team opens its mouth. Such a scarcity of posts can only result in the same kind of user response that Apple itself gets when it finally removes the cloth off its newest product. Its latest post, although obviously a hoax, is no different. iPhone Dev Team fans have responded positively to its April Fools joke, which goes like this:

Planned Tablet Hacks

“The iPhone DevTeam has been passed confidential internal information relating to the next version of the tablet computer the ‘iPad.’ An upcoming redesign of the iPad tablet computer will miniaturize the device so that it will be able to be carried on the user’s person (such as a pocket or small bag). Also a radical move to add a minimum of a 13 kbits/s speech codec to the miniaturized tablet variant is planned.

“The inclusion of the voice codec will allow the user to directly utilize the GSM nomadic network, allowing person to person communications directly using your mini-iPad from anywhere dramatically speeding up the usual typed email or instant messaging capabilities that the iPad offers today.

It is the plan of the iPhone DevTeam to target this device as soon as it is released.”

We feel compelled to note that, although we respect the iPhone Dev Team and its work, Softpedia does not condone practices such as jailbreaking the iPhone or the iPod touch, this constituting the core of the Team’s main activity.
