Orchestra, an all-new to-do utility for iPhone and iPod touch users, is currently being featured on iTunes as the app of the week. The software boasts a built-in chat client, powerful organizing features, and an unbeatable price - free!

According to its developers, “Orchestra is the to-do list that's connected to everyone you work with. It not only helps you organize what needs doing, it also helps you communicate with others to get things done.”

Without question, the flagship feature of this productivity application is the ability to chat with other people using an interface that is very similar to Apple’s upcoming iMessage app in iOS 5.

Orchestra, Inc. says it’s faster than SMS, a claim that should hold water as the feature is basically a built-in IM client that works over WiFi (and perhaps the user’s cellular network as well).

“Do you have more to do than you can get done on your own? Do you regularly work with other people at home or in the office? Then Orchestra is for you,” the makers say.

They pitch the app to those who need to organize their life, divide up chores and remember who is doing what, keep a team on the same page, assign tasks to others, and get updates in realtime.

And partners don’t need to have an iPhone or an iPad running the app. There’s a web-client that everyone can access, and the iOS app stays in perfect sync with it, all the time.

“Orchestra syncs automagically between your phone and the web so you always have access to your list, wherever you are,” says the developer. It also has voice recognition, and quite a few nifty backgrounds to choose from.

Well, no wonder Apple picked Orchestra as the iPhone app of the week.

Those who are only now picking up on Orchestra will be downloading version 0.9.4, which lets you share tasks on Facebook and Twitter, and allows you to "Nudge" anyone sharing a task to get their attention. The usual bug fixes and UI enhancements are included as well.

Trying to figure out how to sort tasks in Orchestra, move them up and down in the order you want them done. Seems like it should be simple. Haven't figured it out or found answers in preferences, etc. Love it, but that feels missing to me.
