German report claims AT&T is finally making good on its promise

Several reports are confirming AT&T is gearing up to provide MMS support for iPhone owners in September. The much-anticipated feature was actually promised for summer 2009, but at least the carrier is delivering. Apple, for its part, introduced MMS support across its iPhone 3G and 3GS devices, but still has to wait for AT&T to give the green light to the service on the iPhone.

Earlier this year, in March to be more precise, Apple announced iPhone OS 3.0, an update to its mobile operating system used by both the iPhone, and the iPod touch. Although contemporary smartphones already shared abilities like cut, copy & paste, MMS, tethering, etc., Apple only introduced these abilities with a late revision of its iPhone OS, while some of these highly anticipated features still cannot be put to use.

MMS is one of those features. First-generation iPhone owners can’t, and will (probably) never send or receive an MMS via legal means provided by a mobile services operator, as MMS is not supported on this particular iPhone model. Apple explicitly stated that only the 3G version of the device (and the 3GS implicitly) would support multimedia messaging. Then came AT&T and said “later this summer,” a statement Apple itself cited.

For fans of the expression “better late than never,” there’s apparently some good news to be had. According to people familiar with AT&T’s plans, the carrier will start supporting the popular multimedia messaging service beginning next month. A report over at funkyspacemonkey.com (German site) reveals that, two weeks ago, an AT&T insider emailed the website with news that the carrier was planning to enable MMS in tandem with the release of an iPhone OS 3.1. A specific date was not provided, while the report remains to be confirmed.

A poster over at the Modmyi forums has published a hilarious video in regards to the news, which we encourage you to view below.
