Whether you make accidental taps, or simply don’t need it

iPhone 6 Plus runs pretty much the same iOS as the regular iPhone 6, albeit with a few minor exceptions. For example, the OS can also display in landscape mode on the bigger model, and there’s a function called Reachability that allows the user to double-tap the home button and bring the top of the screen into reach.

The reason for instating this feature is obvious: to facilitate continued use of the device with just one hand. Even users with big hands will have problems reaching the top area of the screen with their thumb. With Reachability, anyone can easily double-tap the home button and bring down the entire UI by several inches offering easy one-hand access to any function or on-screen button.

But for some users, Reachability doesn’t make a lot of sense. Such as those who actually prefer using the handset with both of their hands, or those with trembling fingers who are prone to making accidental taps on the home button, bringing sending the bottom of the UI beyond their access, and ruining their experience.

For these people, we present these easy steps to turn off the feature once and for all, a process that is as easy as it is reversible, in case they decide at one point that they need it.

How to turn off Reachability

All you need to do is visit the device’s Settings panel, go to General, tap Accessibility, and scroll down to the bottom of the Accessibility menu to where you can see Reachability displayed. There’s a knob there that, by default, should set to on (green). Simply slide it to the left (or just tap on it) and Reachability will never bother you again.

We’ve heard reports that Reachability actually continued to work for some users even after doing everything described in the above paragraph. If that’s also happened to you, a simple reboot of the phone should address the problem. For even more certainty that it will work, do a hard reset by holding down the power and the home buttons simultaneously for 7 to 10 seconds.

Try it before you banish it

Here’s a word of advice before you do anything. Reachability may seem like a gimmick forced onto the OS because Apple messed up and made the phone too big. But it’s actually quite smart, and quite handy once you get used to it. If you’re at times frustrated by the size of the phone, consider using Reachability for a while and see if you can make good use of the feature. Chances are you’ll like it eventually.
