Sketchy report claims the company has scored 15% of the orders

Taiwan’s Industrial and Commercial Times has posted a somewhat sketchy report claiming Pegatron (not Foxconn) has started producing iPhone 6 handsets with the 4.7-inch specification for the display.

A very rough translation of the ITC report reads:

“Apple’s supply chain rumors, Apple will deliver a 4.7-inch iPhone in the third quarter, the market is also optimistic about the size of enlarged iPhone, expected to create a new wave of buying boom, and the master also won about 15% of new iPhone orders, is expected to begin in September of goods, coupled with the old iPhone 4S, iPhone 5C, estimated this year’s iPhone Pegatron point total shipments of 50 million units, compared to 3,500 million units last year, a significant growth of 40%.”

It is said Apple is looking to expand the list of manufacturing partners beyond Foxconn, and there has been some evidence that the California giant and Pegatron have been enjoying a fruitful relationship ever since the iPhone 5c was announced. The Taiwanese manufacturer pretty much handled all the iPhone 5c orders, despite the lackluster sales.

Under normal circumstances, Foxconn should have been first to receive the orders and start production, but no such news has been reported so far. However, some leaks in the past month were indicative of such activities being underway at Foxconn.

As for the specifications, Pegatron is said to be handling the 4.7-inch version of the handset. A rumored 5.5-inch model is also in the works, and it may just be that Apple is saving up Foxconn’s energy for that particular task.

Considering how the Cupertino company divided orders between the two manufacturing partners – the metal iPhone 5s to Foxconn and the plastic iPhone 5c to Pegatron – it may be reasonable to assume that 2014 will be no different and that Pegatron will be making the smaller, cheaper version, whereas Foxconn will be building the high-end iPhone 6 (also dubbed iPhone Air by the media).

Both phones are expected to use the next-generation A8 processor with enhanced CPU and GPU capabilities and more on-board RAM. The storage capacities are likely to be bumped up a notch, and the price will probably go up as well. There are rumors that Apple is speaking to carriers about a $100/€100 spike in subsidies, but such reports are so far scarce and unfounded.
