Apple patents add-ons to improve the iPhone’s optical capabilities

As part of a bulk of patents approved by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Apple saw approved an invention that involves iPhone add-ons, such as swappable camera lenses.

One such application can allow users to actually get an optical zoom out of their handsets, something that hasn’t been possible until now. Well, not without expensive accessories, anyway.

The iPhone only does digital zoom which, in essence, simply blows up the canvas but compromises on the resolution. Optical zoom however, would be quite a charming feature in the iPhone 6. Especially if Apple itself provides the tools.

The invention also involves anti-shake technologies and autofocus, all of which would make great additions to the next-generation iPhone.

Apple has been rumored to be focusing on improving the optics of the iPhone’s camera, rather than increase the megapixel count. These inventions certainly bode well with the industry chatter. Time will tell.
