Apple instructs customers to swap cards or contact support

Early adopters of the iPhone 5s are stupefied by an unexpected error that suggests the SIM card that shipped with the phone is not valid for use.

Imagine waiting in line for days to finally grab that much-coveted Gold iPhone 5s only to arrive home and get the error shown above.

Users attempting to activate their iPhones with a Verizon SIM card claim to be getting the following error message on their phones’ screens, according to iLounge.

“The SIM card that you currently have inserted in this iPhone is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server.”

“This is not a hardware issue with the phone. Please insert another SIM card from a supported carrier or request that this iPhone be unlocked by your carrier. Please contact Apple for more information.”

A handful of users who found themselves in this situation are already finding solutions to the problem, but it is still unclear what’s causing it.

Some have been able to convince their phones to accept the SIM card by doing a complete restore.

Others spontaneously activated a day after being purchased, leading to theories that Verizon simply hasn’t had the time to register all units in its system.

Apple sells the iPhone 5s either with a two-year wireless contract, or unlocked. Various countries are supporting the new phone through various operators. Backends differ, and sometimes so does the phone’s hardware.

These problems aren’t necessarily alarming, considering that the iPhone 5s has only been available to the public for a day.

Reports say Apple sold out all of its Gold iPhone 5s stock in mere hours after the phone’s debut, and even White/Silver shipments are scarce. The Cupertino giant has reportedly placed more manufacturing orders to fulfill demand.
