Apple’s “unapologetically plastic” iPhone may actually be too colorful

Dailybillboardblog.com offers a look at the latest billboard ads of the iPhone 5c, something you may or may not like, depending on your visual taste buds.

Highlighted by TUAW in a piece that casts doubt on Apple’s marketing success with the “unapologetically-plastic” iPhone, the gallery in question shows various billboard ads of the smartphone throughout major cities around the world.

Dailybillboardblog has a more optimistic take on Apple’s choice in colors and layout.

“This may technically be the middle of winter, but it feels like spring has sprung with this second wave of vibrant billboards for Apple's new iPhone 5c smartphone,” says the blog, showing a huge billboard with a vibrant green iPhone atop a yellow background.

“This second installment of creatives switches things up, and almost immediately those first wave billboards seem outdated with this new mixing of colour,” it adds.

These billboards were shot from January 13 to January 15, 2014 around Los Angeles in areas like Melrose Avenue to Sunset Boulevard, Santa Monica Boulevard to La Brea Avenue, Hollywood, and West L.A.

However, some iPhone 5c ads are a little more questionable. Such as the ones showed by TUAW.

Apple doesn’t seem to be getting all these right, apparently. Plus, the “croc” cases can really mess up your visual experience if you put the wrong colors together, such as a black case over a yellow phone.

“Oh, how quickly things change,” reads Apple’s marketing. “Add one of the six Apple-designed cases to your iPhone 5c and it instantly goes from colorfully cool to impossible to ignore.”

“The case design allows the color underneath to show through, creating 30 fun possibilities. So the iPhone 5c Case does more than just protect your phone — it helps it stand out. And it helps you make it yours.”

Apple markets these cases as being perfectly compatible with all of the colors that the iPhone 5c comes in. The cases themselves come in the same six flavors – white, pink, yellow, blue, green, and black – and you can combine these whichever way you want, and you won’t mess up, says the company. However, at the end of the day it’s just a matter of taste.

Apple adds, “With an all-new design, this is iPhone as you’ve never seen it — or held it. iPhone 5c is beautifully, unapologetically plastic, the better to bring its five decidedly uncommon colors to life.”

Unfortunately, for all the oomph the iPhone 5c has, sales have been lower than many analysts had projected. In fact, almost every analyst quoted on the “cheap” iPhone rumor in 2013 said this was the only way Apple would rebound and catch up to Samsung. As it turned out, people continued to flock for the more expensive iPhone 5s.
