The camera module in the next iPhone could be independent of the flash

A camera component purportedly destined for the next-generation iPhone lends credence to rumors that Apple plans to equip the handset with a dual-LED flash for better pictures in low-light conditions.

The iPhone 5 takes insanely-great photos, but proper lighting conditions are required for pixel-perfect images. In low-light conditions, the photos churned out by the 8-megapixel sensor are full of noise, shaky, and sometimes very dark.

It’s not an issue with the iPhone itself, but an issue that has its origins in the minute size of the camera module. That’s why an iPhone can’t quite beat a DSLR, no matter how you put it.

But use more light and the scales start to even out a bit. Check out the iBlazr for a good demonstration of the untapped power of the iPhone’s camera because it lacks a proper flash.

Apple is aware of this issue and, if the latest hardware leaks are any indication, it’s working to give the next wave of iPhone adopters a leg up in photography.

A purported iPhone 5S camera module leaked in China and picked up by nowhereelse.fr in France seems to suggest that Apple is making a big change in this department.

The camera module in the 5S reportedly does away with the built-in LED flash, in favor of a (speculated) dual LED flash that will be independent of the actual imaging module.

The leak is certainly inconclusive, while the dual-LED bit is nothing but speculation on behalf of the tech blogs covering Apple rumors, but it’s certainly a tantalizing prospect to consider.

After all, why would they separate the flash from the camera if they’re not adding something extra?

Apple is also said to be considering a slow-motion feature for the new iPhone, and we’ve recently speculated that it might just be used as a differentiator between the rumored low-cost iPhone 5C and the more expensive iPhone 5S.
