Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer took yesterday’s earnings call as an opportunity to talk about how “pervasive” iPhone rumors have been for Apple’s business.

“Apple’s secrecy creates a certain amount of vacuum, which, as we all know, the Internet abhors,” Oppenheimer said, “and then fills with rumors.”

The entire tech media was expecting Apple to launch an iPhone 5, as well as an updated version of the iPod touch, yet the company used its fall 2011 event to introduce an upgraded version of the iPhone 4 - the iPhone 4S.

Apple’s CFO suggested during yesterday’s conference that many people put off their iPhone 4 purchase because of these rumors, and Apple’s Q4 results ended up lackluster on the smartphone front.

Other business pillars, like the iPad and the Macintosh business, churned up much more impressive figures. All in all, Apple has another record quarter on its hands, despite Wall Street’s disappointment on iPhone sales.
