That sapphire crystal might be more than just a marketing pitch

It doesn’t take a photographer, nor do you need to have any serious artistic inclinations, to notice the incredible level of detail scored by the iPhone 5’s camera.

The iSight camera in the iPhone 5 has been designed with superior optical performance. It’s 25 percent smaller than the camera in iPhone 4S, but features a sapphire crystal lens able to churn up literally crystal-clear images.

Coupled with the 8-megapixel imaging sensor behind the advanced optics, the rear-facing camera module on the latest iPhone makes random snaps (like the one above) seem like the work of a professional.

Granted, you still need to steady your hands really well (and several attempts) to achieve these results (download full-resolution image here). But the iPhone 5 is quite possibly the best DSLR replacement when you’re out and about.

Operating hefty hardware can sometimes affect your spontaneity, you know.
