UK residents have the chance to win an iPhone 5 (provided that Apple actually launches one) by entering a competition organized by Virgin Media to vote for their favorite short film producer, in what can also give up-and-coming new film directors a leg-up in their career.

Announced by means of an email sent to Virgin Media subscribers, the initiative has UK residents voting in the country’s biggest short film competition for the chance to win not only a fifth-generation iPhone, but also an iPad or five 100 Pound iTunes vouchers.

That’s not all. Winners also get to be patted on the shoulder for selecting what could possibly be the next Steven Spielberg, according to the provider of telephone, television and broadband internet services.

A transcript of the initiative, as described by Virgin Media’s SHORTS division, can be found below (emphasis ours):

Virgin Media Shorts - The Sequel.
In only four years, Virgin Media Shorts has become the UK’s biggest short film competition, giving up-and-coming new film directors a leg-up in their career and you the chance to discover the next Spielberg. Catch the cracking two-minute films on your telly in Movies On Demand (look for the Virgin Media Shorts folder), on your Mobile (through Mobile Player) and online.

Vote and win Apple Goodies.
To be in with the chance of winning an iPhone 5, iPad 2 or 5x  £100 iTunes vouchers, have your say at this year’s People’s Choice Awards.

Virgin Media is already featuring this year’s shortlist. Those interested in participating can access virginmediashorts.co.uk through October 28, vote, and automatically enlists themselves into the prize draw.

Apple has not confirmed any plans to launch a new iPhone this year, yet with a new iPhone arriving every other summer since 2007, the smartphone is quite overdue for a refresh.

However, there are no guarantees that Apple won’t be launching an incremental iPhone 4S this year, rather than a major refresh worthy of the 5.0 moniker.
