Chinese OEMs Foxconn Technology and Pegatron Technology have reportedly started assembling the next-generation of iPhones. The companies are said to have been given strict instructions not to package the handsets as Apple is yet to install iOS 5 on them.

A source with a mixed track record of Apple rumor reporting, Japanese blog Macotakara claims to have heard from a Chinese insider that Apple partners Foxconn Technology and Pegatron Technology have kicked off production of the iPhone 5.

As much as 85 per cent of the total order is said to be handled by Foxconn Technology, a long-time Apple partner not only for iPhone assembly, but also for iPad and iPod assembly, as well as other products.

The remainder (15 per cent) will be handled by Pegraton Technology which was recently tapped by Apple for iPad 3 production.

Even if Pegatron is only trusted with less than a quarter of the iPhone 5 assembly, the company has reportedly landed more iPad 3 orders than rival Foxconn.

Because Apple is still putting the finishing touches on iOS 5, Foxconn and Pegatron factories have been instructed not to package the phones.

Apple will have to issue a GM (Golden Master) build to developers before it can install the new software onto fifth-generation handsets.

With seven betas released so far, the final iOS 5 build is not very far away. Moreover, Apple will most likely hold an event this month to introduce the new iPhone 5.

However, according to the Japanese report, the new iPhone event will be held in early October. Sales of the iPhone 5 will kick off in late October in Asia, the source added.

If recent case leaks are any indication, Apple will be releasing an iPhone 5 with a bigger form factor, and a tapered back shell crafted from metal.
