Fifth-gen device may see delay, shortages upon launch

There are, indeed, two iPhone models launching next month, according to a reputable source of Apple rumors, but the iPhone 5 is likely to be delayed, with shipments expected to see constraints until 2012.

Adding fuel to the fire earlier ignited by a New York Times blog post, Apple-centric site 9to5mac claims to have received confirmation that there are two different iPhone models launching this fall, as previously rumored.

Described as an iPhone 4 look-alike with the same glass front and back panels, the iPhone 4S (as the device has been dubbed by the media) is being mass produced in big numbers as we speak, according to the report.

Apple is said to have placed an order of over 10 million units, and that the Cupertino giant plans to sell it both factory-unlocked and with a carrier plan. The site claims there will be more information on this in the near future.

But Apple also has an iPhone 5 that's currently being mass produced as well. Boasting an alleged tear-drop shape, a larger screen and a thinner form factor, this device is experiencing “design and production delays”, according to the source.

Even with two major contractees tasked with assembling the hardware (Foxconn Electronics and Pegatron Technology), it is believed Apple will see a slight delay in the launch of the iPhone 5. It is also being speculated that there will be shortages of the phone well into 2012.

iPhone 4S aside, the next-generation iPhone 5 is said to be “a sight to behold”, mostly thanks to its slightly more rounded design and a lightweight body.

Finally, the sources also said that the camera Apple chose for the iPhone 5 will compete with high-end photography solutions available on the market today.
