John Shegerian, the Chairman and CEO of Electronic Recyclers International (ERI), a recycler of electronics and e-waste, issued a statement about Apple’s iPhone 4 launch, outlining that the new iPhone is “an intuitively designed device that takes the concept of the smart phone to the next level”. Signaling that Apple’s new smartphone will render a lot of cell phones obsolete, Shegerian took this opportunity to announce that ERI is committed to the responsible recycling of such items. The recycler also announced an iPhone app.

According to ERI’s June 25 report, Shegerian said that the iPhone 4 is bound to create enormous new opportunities across multiple industries, but also to trigger the public to get rid of older devices - “now rendered obsolete by the newer, user friendly technology the iPhone 4G provides”, the company said.

“We congratulate Apple for their amazing success with the iPad and applaud them for once again capturing the imagination and interest of the public and producing a ‘must have’ phone that is sure to be a key component of modern culture,” said Shegerian. “The side effect of such innovative excellence is that millions of older, obsolete cell phones will be discarded and left behind. Fortunately, organizations such as ERI are committed to the responsible recycling of such items so they do not end up in landfills or illegally exported.”

Through its 1-800-Recycling.com initiative, ERI also released a new app for iPhone and iPad, called “My Recycle List”. Described as a user-friendly tool designed to help anyone to participate in the recycling of items they would otherwise throw away, the application is available for free download from the iTunes App Store. Key features include the ability to find nearby recycling locations using GPS or ZIP, search for multiple materials at once, organize and save lists of items for future use, as well as other benefits like the in-app interactive maps and web browser, coverage of the entire United States and some of Canada etc. The developers at 1-800-Recycling.com call it “a grocery list for recyclers”.
