Dev Team making progress on the unlock front for iPhone 4 users

iPhone Dev Team member MuscleNerd has confirmed that iPhone 4 is unlockable by means of a background task enabled in a similar manner to that employed for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. Reports point out to one of the hacker’s recent Twitter updates saying, “Next step is to keep the task backgrounded like we did for 3G/3GS. Backgrounded task is the unlock.”

With every new iPhone or iOS version rolled out, the infamous iPhone Dev Team is tasked with finding new holes to compromise the software, and offer jailbreak and unlock tools to the iPhone community. The team takes it upon itself to achieve these goals, and asks for no compensation whatsoever. In fact, the hackers don’t even accept donations, although many would gladly support their efforts.

Two weeks ago, the Team updated its PwnageTool application to version 4.0, bringing jailbreak support for iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and second generation iPod touches. Subsequently updated to version 4.01 (for one reason or another), the tool can effectively jailbreak these devices, but does not provide a carrier unlock. For this, ultrasn0w 0.93 is available for unlocking iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS devices. As revealed by MuscleNerd’s Twitter feed, the iPhone 4 is next on the list of supported devices.
