A report posted on April 5, 2010 confirms the existence of iPhone OS 4.0 that Apple plans to preview to a select audience on April 8, Thursday, this week. Apple itself made the confirmation by sending out invitations to an event at its headquarters, where the iPad maker will unveil its latest achievements with the iPhone operating system, as well as future plans.

Gizmodo reveals that, “Apple's just sent an invite ‘for a sneak peek of the next generation of iPhone OS software’ on April 8 at 10AM Pacific. That's in three days!” A report by 9to5mac provides more lines of text from the actual invite, revealing further details about the event. According to the latter, the invite says, “Join us at an invitation-only event for a sneak peek of the next generation of iPhone OS software. The event takes place at Apple, Building 4, Town Hall on April 8 at 10:00 a.m. Suggested arrival time for registration is 9:30 a.m. RSVP to…”

It is believed that Apple’s move to showcase iPhone OS 4.0 later this week is directly tied to the company’s rumored plans to unveil a new advertising platform, believed to be the brainchild of Apple’s acquisition of Quattro Wireless, an expert in the branch. Set to be officially unveiled to Madison Avenue on April 7th, the platform has reportedly been described as “revolutionary” and “our next big thing” by Apple chief Steve Jobs, according to executives familiar with the plan. The MediaPost report includes a statement from Josh Lovison, the mobile lead at Interpublic's Emerging Media Lab, who said, “Everyone will be following this very closely,” adding that, “Given the way that Apple is able to package things up, with very slick presentations, it will be interesting to see what they do with advertising.”

Apple may also confirm the existence of next-generation iPhone hardware in tandem with the OS 4.0 sneak peek. Believed to be dubbed iPhone HD, the device (if confirmed) is expected to add a front facing camera (web cam), a higher resolution screen, a metal case like that of the first-generation handset, more advanced wireless capabilities, and an ability to run multiple apps at once (multitasking). All these enhancements would also be backed by the Apple-developed A4-family system-on-a-chip CPU.
