AT&T has issued an official report announcing a new price for Apple’s iPhone 3GS. Beginning tomorrow, Friday, January 7, both new and upgrade-eligible existing AT&T customers will be able to purchase the handset for just $49, the American wireless operator said.

Note: To make it clear for everyone, AT&T sells the iPhone this cheap only because it ties a two year contract to your purchase, or extends your existing one accordingly.

According to AT&T, the offer will be available online at www.att.com/iphone, across more than 2,200 of its retail locations across The States, as well as through AT&T business channels, and Apple’s own retail establishments.

Claiming to offer support for Apple’s iPhone 3GS by connecting it to the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network, the carrier touts the smartphone as being able to deliver the following advantages, which come standard with AT&T:

· Allows for true smartphone multi-tasking, such as talking and using applications at the same time, on AT&T’s mobile broadband network · Provides access to our entire national Wi-Fi network with nearly 23,000 hotspots · Provides the best global coverage with wireless voice and data access in more than 200 countries

“We want to deliver the best, most complete package for our customers – from price, to speed, to worldwide access and more,” said David Christopher, chief marketing officer of AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets.

Christopher continued, “Combined with our new, lower monthly data plans beginning at just $15 a month, this new price brings even more value to one of the most popular devices in our leading lineup of smartphones.”

He concluded by saying, “We’re very excited for more people to experience iPhone on the nation's fastest mobile broadband network.”

AT&T ends its announcement with the mentioning that iPhone 3GS is capable of handling the latest iOS version from Apple, and the reminder that it comes with Apple’s “revolutionary” App Store.

At the time of this writing, Apple’s online store still lists iPhone 3GS 8GB models as available for $99 with a two-year contract with AT&T.
