Jailbroken, and even unlocked iPhone custom firmware 3.1.3 IPSWs freely available for different devices

A website is offering free downloads for custom iPhone 3.1.3 IPSWs to which device owners can restore and instantly jailbreak, without having to go through the hassle of following tutorials, and jailbreak on their own. Particularly interesting is that they offer download links for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS Custom Firmware 3.1.3 IPSWs that have been unlocked.

“You can jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 by creating Custom firmware IPSW file using PwnageTool 3.1.5,” a post over at iPhoneHeat reads, “which is considered the best way to jailbreak iPhone and iPod touch but the PwnageTool is available for Mac only. So, only Mac users are able to create custom firmware 3.1.3 using PwnageTool.” “What if you’re on Windows? and do not own a Mac or don’t want to go through the PwnageTool procedure?? [...] you can download iPhone OS 3.1.3 Custom firmware for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G and iPhone 2G. These custom firmwares 3.1.3 are created with PwnageTool and can be restored via iTunes,” the site claims.

It reveals that there are two types of custom firmware bundles available for download at its website. There are the “activated” IPSWs, which target users who want to unlock their iPhone, and “not activated” bundles, aimed at users who are on Official Carrier only. For example, the site offers three .zip archives for the iPhone 2G Custom Firmware 3.1.3 IPSW, which users are supposed to download and join together. They are listed as follows:

- iPhone1_1_3.1.3_7E18_Custom_Restore_Activated.zip.001; - iPhone1_1_3.1.3_7E18_Custom_Restore_Activated.zip.002; - iPhone1_1_3.1.3_7E18_Custom_Restore_Activated.zip.003.

The resulted file should be named “iPhone1,1_3.1.3_7E18_Custom_Restore.ipsw”. After joining the split custom IPSW file by unpacking the archives, users are required to put their iPhone in recovery mode, fire up iTunes with the device connected to the computer, and selectively restore their software to the respective IPSW file. “It will start restoring your iPhone which may take 10mins and will jailbreak iPhone,” iPhoneHead says.

Since we don’t encourage such activities, we’d advise iPhone users to stay away from this method of updating to iPhone OS 3.1.3. However, if you do wish to install a custom firmware bundle created by someone else, it is at least advised that you back up the contents of your iPhone before proceeding with the installation.

By doing a quick check, Softpedia learned that several other sources provided the same “benefits” to iPhone users, and even to owners of an iPod touch. Unlike iPhoneHeat, these sites are careful to outline that iPhone 3GS users that are already at 3.1.3 will not be able to jailbreak using this method (restoring to a custom IPSW downloaded from the web). Additionally, those who rely on blacksn0w for unlock (in other words, if their baseband is 5.11.07) should stay away from this method completely, these sources say. Plus, the infamous iPhone Dev Team is likely working on adding more supported devices to its PwnageTool jailbreak solution as we speak.
