Several Apple Discussions posters are reporting that updating to the latest version of the iPhone firmware (2.2.1) has resolved a widespread glitch with text messaging. Interestingly, Apple did not mention including such a fix with the release of the new software update.

By connecting their devices to iTunes, users are presented with a 246.4MB software update for their iPhones. The new firmware “improves the general stability of Safari” and “fixes an issue where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in the Camera Roll,” Apple says. For iPod touch users, the update includes these new additions, while delivering an extra fix - correcting an issue that caused some Apple Lossless (ALAC) to skip during playback.

According to Apple, iPhone Software 2.2.1 is compatible with the iPhone 3G and the first-generation iPhone, while OS 2.2.1 for the iPod touch is compatible with both models available (first and second-generation iPod touch).

Apparently, the release also seems to fix an issue that involves an error message triggered every time a user attempts to send a text. Before applying the update, it was impossible to resolve with any resets or settings adjustments, forum posters revealed, though some were able to get texts sent after switching SIM cards.

“Fantastic! Just done the update and everything working fine - I hope it sorts everyone else out as well - Thanks to Apple and to everyone who tried to help!,” said one user.

“Installing firmware 2.2.1 fixed my SMS issue. I still had troubles with visual voice mail. I called Orange France, and they had to reinit some network settings. Now everything s working fine,” another Apple Discussions user wrote.

Several others affected by the glitch claim to have had it resolved by iPhone OS 2.2.1, with some even reporting the update has resolved a few problems related to Visual Voicemail.
