New tests following the launch of iPhone software 2.1 have revealed that the percentage of iPhone 3G slow connection speeds has been cut down to half. Test My iPhone administrator Donovan Lewis notes that this is a considerably major improvement.

“We’re seeing an overall more consistent kbps score and the number of 3G tests where the user scored a real low 100kbps - 300kbps is down,” Lewis told Cult of Mac, adding, “I think that’s a real big improvement overall.”

Test My iPhone is a mobile speed test tailored specifically for users of an Apple iPhone, starting with the page display, and ending with the big on-screen buttons for touchscreen use. Four such buttons (tests) are available: one for having a quick speed test done for download and upload on EDGE, 3G and Wi-Fi, one for the stats (which you can download, upload and view on your iPhone or Mac), one for the last 100 speed tests taken, and one for the World Stats (to be able to compare speeds based on regions and other influential factors).

Using Test My iPhone not only can you can test your iPhone's download connection speed and compare your results with others’, but you can also register to keep track of all your connection results, and view detailed stats from your results.

The aforementioned Mac-based site points out that, prior to Friday’s 2.1 update release, 3G download speeds registered in the 100 - 300kbps range accounted for around 10 percent of all 3G speed tests done using the online testing service. Results in the 100 -300kbps range after iPhone 2.1-enabled owners started using it now account for just 5.37% of all 3G download tests, says the publication. Over 250,000 3G tests were registered, with a total of 927,302 (EDGE, 3G and Wi-Fi) speed tests being taken. The online testing utility for iPhone users also offers testing for non-iPhone connectivity.
