Apple to put cellular radios in its fourth-generation iPad, or “iPad mini”

Apple.pro is dishing around images claiming to show the actual iPad mini slated for an October unveiling. The Taiwanese site says the tablet will boast 3G networking, enabling owners to access the web anywhere, as long as they have a cellular signal.

All iPad models to date have been equipped with 3G, a wireless standard that enables mobile devices to connect to the Internet via mobile operators.

Also, all iPad models to date have been using the same design element to allow the radio waves to pass through the tablet’s chassis – an opening at the top of the aluminum shell completed by plastic. The third-gen iPad, however, also does 4G / LTE.

The iPad mini, Apple’s fourth-generation tablet slated for October (if pundits are correct), will employ the same wireless standards as its predecessors, in that it will be able to connect to an operator’s 3G network. Customers will only need to slide in a SIM card and they’ll be good to go.

Apple.pro doesn’t say anything about 4G / LTE in the iPad mini, but the Taiwanese site says it has learned from trusted sources that Apple’s miniaturized tablet would, indeed, boast cellular capabilities.

The two photos on the left depict what Apple.pro claims to be the actual iPad mini.

The device is said to employ a 7.85-inch display. Many industry watchers have called the iPad mini a 7-inch tablet. However, the specification is clearly closer to 8 inches.

Apple this week has confirmed September 12 as the date for its next major product unveiling. The press invitations bear clear indications that the event will yield an iPhone 5.

Pundits believe Apple has planned a second event for October, during which the much-hyped iPad mini will be unveiled.
