Apple is reportedly planning to debut the new iPad mini on October 23 and while expectations are high, analysts believe that the new device may hurt sales of its bigger brother.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster told All Things D that Apple is likely to lose one million standard iPads for every five million smaller iPads.

Still, that’s not at all a problem for Apple’s profits, especially if sales of the iPad mini reach expectations.

“We believe that the smaller iPad could cannibalize one million regular iPad units in December or a rate of cannibalization at 20 percent,” Munster said. “[So] for every five million smaller iPads, you lose one million standard iPads.”

It’s as yet unclear whether the iPad mini could indeed be priced in such a way that it would cannibalize his big brother, but previous reports have pointed out that Apple is considering a $320 (€249) starting price for the Wi-Fi-only version.
