Several sources have confirmed to the WSJ-owned All Things D that Apple is indeed launching a smaller version of its iPad this fall, following the ceremonious unveiling of a new iPhone model.

Corroborating claims from two reputable pundits, John Paczkowski confirms that “Apple’s next generation iPhone and its so-called ‘iPad mini’ will debut at two separate events this fall, rather than a single one as has been widely speculated, according to several sources.”

Those sources reportedly said that only after Apple is done with the iPhone unveiling will the new iPad come out. The iPad mini launch will occur this October, these people said, with a display size just shy of eight inches, as widely rumored in the tech media.

"That device […] will be uncrated at a second special event, which sources said is currently scheduled for October,” according to Paczkowski.

To be noted that All Things D has cemented quite a track record at confirming Apple rumors in the past few years, making the iPad mini rumor all but confirmed at this point.

“I don’t think Apple would want reviews of both a new iPhone and new-size iPad appearing at the same time,” Gruber wrote in a recent blog entry.

“Why share the spotlight? Why have another Apple product battling with the iPhone for the top spots in news coverage? … The more I think about it, the less sense it makes for the iPhone to even share the stage at the announcement with any other product,” he argued.

“The iPhone is too big, too cool, and garners too much attention — and it’s in Apple’s interest to keep that attention undiluted,” Gruber concluded.

Jim Dalrymple, a well-connected Apple pundit himself, agreed with Gruber after reading his analysis, stating, “Oh that Gruber is a smart fellow.” Full story here.
