The same thing happened to the larger iPads when Apple introduced the Retina spec

The Retina display in Apple’s iPad mini 2 reportedly needs a slightly larger chassis, in order to accommodate extra/larger components (possibly the backlight modules).

According to a leak from Japan’s Macotakara, third-party cases for Apple’s upcoming iPad mini 2 are already making the rounds. The sellers of these accessories indicate that the iPad mini 2 will be thicker by 0.3 mm (going from 7.2mm to 7.5mm), and 0.2mm wider, (from 134.7mm to 134.9mm).

The reason is said to be the new Retina display Apple plans to include with the refreshed diminutive tablet.

Avid Apple fans will remember that the same thing happened in late-2012, when Apple introduced a slightly bulkier iPad 3 to make room for BLU units needed to light up the power-hungry Retina display.
