14 DAY TRIAL // Mere days into the iPad’s public debut, the device has been hacked. MuscleNerd, a member of the infamous iPhone Dev Team, has posted a video showing how the hacker was able to log into the iPad “jailbreak style,” as he puts it. The iPhone Dev Team is notorious for hacking the iPhone OS, the software that also powers Apple’s iPad.
“Logging into the iPad...jailbreak style” was posted by MuscleNerd on April 04, 2010. The video has garnered some 430,000 views to date. The hacker described his achievements as “very early work on porting ‘Spirit’ jailbreak by @comex to iPad.” Apple’s tablet computer is regarded as a big iPhone mostly because it runs an enhanced version of the iPhone software, although its capabilities far exceed those of the smartphone. The jailbreak exploits a bug found on iPhone OS 3.1.3 that Apple didn’t bother to patch in the iPad's iPhone OS 3.2.
The people behind the iPhone Dev Team aren’t the only ones actively searching for holes in the iPhone software. Renowned iPhone hacker geohot is also busy cooking up tools for the iPhone jailbreak community. His most recent developments were shown in a video with the hacker demoing an untethered jailbreak for the latest iPod touch 3G and iPhone 3GS. At the time of the posting, geohot mentioned the possibility that his hack could also support the iPad. The latest untethered jailbreak “is all software based,” geohot said. He added that, “It is completely untethered” and that, “[It] works on all current tethered models (ipt2, 3gs, ipt3), and will probably work on iPad too.”
While the iPad doesn’t need a carrier unlock, it can be hacked in a way that a user will be able to direct it to various download locations on the web, and get content that hasn’t been approved by Apple in its iTunes Store.
