Facebook is planning to roll out an iPad-optimized application in the coming weeks, with tablet-specific UI elements, and the ability to upload photos directly from the iPad’s built-in cameras.

An iOS Facebook app is available for users of an iPhone or iPod touch, and while the software is compatible with the iPad, the interface is not optimized for it, providing a very limited experience.

Citing people briefed on the company’s plans, The New York Times’ Bits blog reveals that the iPad application will be available from the Apple App Store free of charge in a matter of weeks.

Reportedly, the software has been carefully designed and optimized for the tablet experience, and has been in development for over a year, despite rumors that FaceBook didn’t see any interest in the iPad.

It is now in the final stages of testing, according to people in question, who asked to remain anonymous.

One of them said that CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been actively involved in the project.

As a result of this, the app will have overhauled Chat and Groups features, and will allow users to shoot and upload photos and videos the instant they take them using the tablet.

“The photo and video experience is amazing, offering full resolution and full-screen images,” a person who has seen the app reportedly said.

The blog report also includes a quote from Jaime Schopflin, a communications manager at Facebook.

She declined to discuss any future product, but did say: “We have a great relationship with Apple that is exemplified by our iPhone application, but with regards to an iPad application we have nothing to announce now, and cannot comment on future Facebook products,” she said.

Contacted with questions regarding the potential release of an iPad Facebook app, Apple declined to comment (as if there was even a chance they’d have agreed to spill the beans on their talks with the social network giant).
