The device won’t gain the rumored 12-inch display, according to KGI securities

Recalling rumors of Apple developing a 12-inch iPad, analyst Ming Chi-Kuo with KGI Securities says there will not be such a device. Rather, the sixth-generation iPad will only add a higher-density display, he says.

In a research note released to investors, Kuo states, “Contrary to speculation that next year’s iPad […] may come in a 12” form, or larger, we think it will not change from the current 9.7” format as we think a 12” iPad would not provide a good mobility experience given today’s technology limitations.”

Which is most likely true, considering that many people prefer the iPad mini (despite its standard-resolution display) because of the high portability of the tablet.

The second reason behind Kuo’s forecast is the advancement of display technologies moving past the Retina standard with a 30-40% increase in pixel density. Kuo thinks Apple will want to be among the first to offer this specification, echoing a similar analysis by DisplaySearch.

“In light [of] advancing Oxide and a-Si technologies, the PPI of iPad 6, which we expect to come out at end-2014, will exceed that of 2013’s iPad 5 by 30-40%, which will offer more competent visuals,” Kuo said.

As far as the third-generation iPad mini is concerned, Kuo believes Apple will not go beyond Retina (or 326 PPI).

In the meantime, Apple is preparing its iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 for unveiling later this month.

According to reports, the company’s showcase has been scheduled for October 22, but the press invitations are still not out yet.

The iPad 5 is expected to boast the same Retina display currently used in the fourth-generation tablet, but in a smaller (thinner, lighter, etc.) chassis with a design akin to that of the iPad mini.

For the iPad mini, Apple has a Retina display upgrade prepared. Both tablets will get faster processors as well.
