Sources from the display industry are reporting that TPK, a touch panel maker and a partner of Apple’s, expects its performance to improve due to OGS touch panel orders from Apple.

“TPK expects shipments for the technology to increase throughout August and September as Apple gears up to launch its next-generation iPad,” the sources said, according to a DigiTimes report.

OGS means One Glass Solution, or One Glass Touch Technology, and it’s sometimes also referred to as Direct Pattern Window (DPW) or Sensor on Lens (SOL). We’ll stick to OGS with this time around. So what does it do?

Well, according to the people at US Micro Products (who have the technology detailed briefly on their site), it’s a new manufacturing method that deposits an ITO layer directly underneath the cover lens of the touch-sensitive panel which takes input from your hands and sends it to the computer inside the iPad.

“This stack up pattern creates a panel that is thinner, lighter and more optically clear,” according to the description.

Manufacturing costs are low, and the same goes for overall equipment production. In short, no reason not to use it.
