The next-generation iPad 5, which analysts expect to see unveiled at a special event in September, will employ a new type of touchscreen technology, as well as a new design.

Nothing new under the sun, as they say, but every tidbit from Apple’s Asian suppliers counts in the months leading up to an official unveiling.

All eyes are on Apple’s upcoming fall event where the company will not only reveal a new pair of iPhones (or so spins the rumor mill), but also a fresh new iPad with a new design.

According to people in Apple’s supply chain quoted by Taiwan’s DigiTimes, “Apple's next-generation 9.7-inch iPad is expected to have 2,048 by 1,536 resolution and 264ppi, the same as that of the current model […] But the new device will have a slimmer bezel design and use GF2 touch screen technology, which will make it thinner and lighter.”

The GF2 touch panels will (most likely) be supplied by TPK and GIS, said the sources, adding that the Retina displays will be sourced from LG Display, Samsung Display and Sharp. Which blends well with a recent report from Korea which said Apple had dropped AU Optronics from its supply channel.
