There’s no quad-core SoC (system on a chip) inside the next Apple iPad, but there will be more RAM inside the new silicon packaging, as well as stronger graphical output, according to a new report.

Apple is waiting until later this year to introduce the A6 chip, sources are telling The Verge. The iPad 3 will have the rumored A5X SoC which boasts two processing cores (just like the A5 inside the iPhone 4S and iPad 2).

However, the A5X is said to have increased GPU capabilities.

The iPad 3 will pack more RAM, enabling it to run applications more smoothly, and to carry out many more tasks simultaneously. In all senses, every last function of the iPad will get a leg up thanks to increased amount of RAM.

The sources reportedly added that, “along with the A5X, the device will […] come in a variety of LTE flavors.” The Verge recalls rumors of the iPad 3 packing an LTE chipset, “and we’re told that it will definitely be announced for both the Verizon and AT&T networks tomorrow,” it reports.

There will be “two distinct, separate versions of the LTE tablet (one for each network),” according to the site, and there will be “a third international model which does double duty on 3G; a CDMA / GSM model using a similar radio chipset to the iPhone 4S (a Qualcomm Gobi chip),” the sources informed.

Apple’s planned event later today will finally confirm which of these rumblings are accurate. For instance, there’s little to no doubt that Apple will have a Retina display announcement today. At its third iteration, the iPad simply must feature an upgraded display, most pundits agree. The rest remains to be seen.

Apple’s event is scheduled for 10:00 AM today, at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, California.
