Apple has confirmed some of the iPad 2 technical specifications, including CPU speed, graphics performance, storage options and others, but it was mum about the amount of random access memory or RAM inside its second-generation tablet computer.

While many expect the likes of iFixit to pop the hood and peek inside Apple's latest creation, Softpedia may have already discovered how much RAM the iPad 2 has.

Some may be inclined to believe that Apple intentionally left out the mentioning of how many gigabytes of RAM the iPad 2 has because it was unable to upgrade it memory-wise.

But we think this may not be the case at all.

Apple has historically left out RAM as a specification during its keynote presentations. When it comes to iOS devices, the company generally tells the public that it’s faster because it has a faster processor, period.

Remember when iPhone 4 was introduced at WWDC 2010? Did Steve Jobs say anything about it having 512MB of RAM (double the amount of its predecessor)? No he didn’t, and the same should Apply for the iPad 2.

But the evidence doesn’t come from this easy-to-make comparison between Apple’s keynote presentations (by the way, you can watch it now).

It comes from Apple’s fine print on the iMovie for iPad marketing page where the company clearly states that “iMovie works with iPhone 4, fourth-generation iPod touch, and iPad 2”.

Apple’s FAQ for the iOS version of iMove further stresses that “iMovie is compatible with iPhone 4 running iOS 4 or later. iMovie is also compatible with iPod touch (4th generation) running iOS 4.1 or later. iMovie is not compatible with earlier models of iPhone or iPod touch, and it is not compatible with iPad.”

iPhone 4, iPod touch 4 and the iPad 1 all have the A4 processor, but only the iPhone 4 has 512MB of RAM, whereas the iPad only has 256MB.

In other words, the 512MB of RAM may be what iMovie needs for lift off.

Update: iPod touch 4th gen also has 256MB of RAM but is supported. Apparently memory isn't the only thing holding Apple back from launching a version for the original iPad. Thanks to all the Twitter followers who pointed that out.

Those who performed the first teardowns of the iPad 1 were baffled to learn that Apple’s iPad didn't pack more RAM. But they left it at that, and moved on.

Now, Apple has announced GarageBand and iMovie for iPad. While GarageBand seems to be a go for both iPad models, iMovie will only work with the second-generation device.

Apparently, the video making app demands a lot of memory to perform well.

That’s what Apple says, and that’s why we believe iPad 2 has at least 512 MB of RAM, just in case anyone was asking.
