Update 2.2.9 brings security fixes instead of requested features, breaks landscape texting

The latest version of Yahoo Messenger for iOS devices continues to upset customers, as it lacks several important features and doesn’t work in landscape mode. The web giant continues to develop updates for it, but fails to include what users actually crave for.

“Stay connected with your friends—anytime, anywhere with Yahoo Messenger. Send free international text messages. Or share photos and videos with your Messenger contacts in real-time,” reads the marketing material from Yahoo.

Users can make free voice and video calls to their Yahoo buddies, share photos, get notification alerts when an IM arrives (even when using a different app), send free international SMS messages in the USA, Philippines, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Canada, Pakistan, Kuwait, and Thailand.

Version 2.2.9 arrives with security enhancements and support for Retina displays, though avid users of the application were hoping for something else completely.

User TAHensel64 says, “This app was working just fine. No issues, clean interface, etc. Now, with today's ‘update’ it is horrible. Suddenly, I can no longer view in landscape orientation. When I use my bluetooth keyboard, that means I cannot charge the iPad at the same time. [...] My iPad now looks like a giant iPhone, but with less funtionality. How can we get back to the prior interface that worked and get rid of this awful ‘update’?”

A person identified as Silbverfox450 chimes in to say, “Since the update it won’t rotate to horizontal position,” echoing the complaint filed by the previous user. This person says he/she will “have to look for a different app,” which most likely isn’t just a threat, as many users are completely dependent on texting in landscape.

A customer using the handle Nybwn writes, “This app is good, but it needs more features like being able to appear available to only whom you choose like it is on the desktop version and blackberry phones too. Also archive so that earlier messages can be loaded and read for reference. The updated look is crisp that took so long. Thumbs up... Just a lil more tweaking and added features pls...”

Everyone seems to be having a different complaint, while many users are frustrated that version 2.2.9 has lost landscape mode.

Yahoo Messenger is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPad second generation, iPad third generation, iPad fourth generation, iPad Air, iPad mini, iPad mini with Retina display, iPod touch fourth generation, and iPod touch fifth generation, and requires iOS 6.0 or later.
