Apple finally announces a long-due iPad feature

Apple is currently hosting its big WWDC 2015 media event and one of the most important novelties coming out today is iOS 9.

The new software will bring several improvements, and we already detailed Proactive Siri for you. But there’s a major feature we’ve been hoping will land on iPad for a long time: multi-tasking. And yes, this particular function will finally come embedded in iOS 9.

Apple is looking to make its tablets more functional in the business environment, in order to be able to better compete with the likes of Samsung. The Korean tech giant’s Galaxy NotePRO 12.2 already offers this option ever since it was launched back in 2014.

Apple might be a year late to add it to its devices, but we guess it’s better late than never. The new feature will allow iPad users to run two different apps side by side and to switch between them just by tapping.

Apple’s SVP of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, demonstrated the new function on stage. On the iPad, the multi-tasking experience revolves around three things: SlideOver, SplitView, and picture-in-picture.

SlideOver

A new task switcher feat becomes visible when double-tapping the home button. From there, you can choose an app and then execute the new SlideOver function. This allows users to quickly swipe in another app from the side.

Then, you will be able to pull down from the top and bring other applications in. Federighi showcased how one might browse the Web while having a conversation on Messages at the same time.

Users can also resize windows, and drag and drop between apps. You can choose between 50/50 or 70/30 on the screen.

Split View

This function allows two apps to be open and active on the same screen. Both apps will remain fully active within their confines, and users can drag and drop between apps, while a four-finger swap can be used to switch apps in each zone.

Picture-in-picture

Last but not least, Apple will let users put a small video player on top of their main video interest. So if you think you can watch the latest Gray’s Anatomy episode on top of a demo (ESPN viewer in this case), you’re welcome to try.

However, bear in mind that these features won’t become available on all iPad models. Split View will be compatible with iPad Air 2, while the SliveOver and picture-in-picture feats will be making their way on the iPad Air (from 2013 and up) and all models of the iPad mini.
